After the success of last years ‘Junk Love’ exhibition, the peoples from Reverse Garbage decided to take the leap and create their own Sustainable Art and Design Center. Welcome to M.A.D a space for sustainable design.
M.A.D stands for ‘make a difference’, it’s also a Sustainable Art and Design Center and is definitely a unique shopping alternative for the well trodden Newtown path. M.A.D. lives in a smallish shop on Enmore Rd (it’s down towards the King St end) and it’s a great place for any aspiring sustainable designer to drop in, chat and perhaps even buy something from another local designer.
The team at MAD explain that all the works have an environmental commitment so whilst they might not all be re-use objects there is definitely and agenda and innovative use of materials which are recyclable, made from recycled components or simply low impact deisgns.
The shop operates with a gallery style, this means that the range of goods and designers are constantly evolving. In the shop you will find artwork for walls, ranges of lights, jewellery, furniture, bags, clothes - you get the picture.
Over the next couple of months I hope to be going down to MAD and doing profiles and reviews on some of the designer’s work that’s in there, so stay tuned. Or, please also feel free to go down and review n blog some of the designs which you’ve seen.
I think the thing that I find most exciting about MAD is what they offer the designer. MAD being a project of Reverse Garbage operates as a Non Profit community collective, as such it allows the shop to support local designers who may just be starting out. It’s a great testing ground for all aspects of design especially prototyping. So if you have some sustainable designs or ideas that you’ve been sitting on, why not knock a couple up and go down and see them. It’a an opportunity to get exposure right in the heart of Newtown you’ve got to ask yourself, what do I have to loose.
In fact even before you do that you should pop on down to Reverse Garbage and see if you can pick up some materials and enter into this years ‘Junk Love’ competition. Get in contact with MAD and Reverse Garbage for more details.
