Change Design Week has rebriefed the Young Designer of the Year Award.
As part of our running critique on Sydney Design Week, Change Design Week has put forward a challenge to eliminate plastic bags through design. Please see the Change Design Week blog for more details

The Young Designer of the Year 2004 Competition (pdf briefing paper)
Deadline 10 July 2004. Brief: Design an innovative way of using plastic bags with themselves or other materials that renders the throwaway into a sophisticated domestic object or environ. The name of the game is to take this mundane and environmentally noxious material and create something people will enjoy using in and around the home for many years to come. Open to Australian design students and recent graduates (last 5 years).

Sappi ‘Ideas That Matter’
Any Visual Communicators wanting to team up with us on this one?
'Ideas that Matter' is a programme by Sappi that provides funding to support creative design for social good. Designers are invited to submit proposals for a print campaign that benefits a non-profit organisation involved in scientific, environmental, educational, cultural or relief programmes for social change. Deadline: May 31, 2004.

Timex2154
Register by May 15. Entries due May 31st. US$20,000 worth of prizes will be awarded to winners in three categories: Wrist-Based, Wearable and Conceptual. Timepieces/Timekeeping for the future: must be personal and portable.

Adbusters ABTV Contest
To fill Adbusters TV with the most inspiring, amusing and politically pointed material available, they're calling on you to submit your best work to the second annual ABTV Contest. They're looking for short videos, flash and audio (animation, music, mocumentaries . . . or whatever) in three categories:

1. DIRECT ACTION (jams, spoofs, pranks, protests)
2. EPIPHANIES (personal works)
3. MINI-DOCUMENTARIES

Prizemoney: $5,000 to divvy up among the ten winning entrants. Deadline: May 31, 2004. Select entries will be featured as they roll in - stay tuned to www.adbusters.org to check out the competition.

2004 Sorbent Design Awards
One for the locals (Sustainability not an issue!)
Create a winning sorbent tissue box design. The top 6 entries will be commercially produced. First prize: 2 week internship with award-winning studio, 3 Deep Design + $1,000 cash Runners up: 1 of 6 scanners Eligibility: Students must be currently enrolled in an Australian University/TAFE undergraduate design, art or visual communication course. Deadline: 28 May 2004.

Lancome Fresh Faces Discovery
For girls only: they want to boost the career of a hip young thing in design, art or photography with $5000 and a spot in Cosmo.

Coram Sustainable Design Award Reminder
For those who registered by December last year, you have until June 30th to get those entries in.
