AUSTRALIAN ORGS
Australian
Environmental Labelling Association Inc
There have been a number of attempts to get this idea off the ground in
Australia. This is the latest Australian Ecolabel with all the information
you need to get the certification according to the ISO 14020 series of
international standards. We have reservations about this kind of approach
to sustainability – ecolabels design out consumer thinking, label
'the environment' and can be indiscriminate with little sense for the
power of design to shape choice. Some of the country's leading independent
sustainability experts are on this panel, however. Ecolabels have been
very successful in parts of Europe in helping to develop greener consumer
consciousness.
The
Bower
Forget Design for Disassembly and complex recycling infrastructures –
here is a local community initiative extending the life of discarded household
products. The Bower, based in Marrickville, Sydney, collects discarded
products for repair and re-use. Workshops on household electrical product
repair are on offer to help keep salvageable products out of the waste
stream.
Centre
for Design at RMIT The Centre for Design is based in Melbourne, Australia
and has a strong commitment to Design for Environment, Life Cycle Analysis,
and Extended Producer Responsibility.
